Dentures in SoHo

If you’re experiencing tooth loss, you’re experiencing many other losses, including loss of facial structure, confidence, and food choices to name a few. Whether you lost your teeth due to health issues, aging, hygiene problems, or injury, dentures are a great option for just about everyone. You deserve to feel the confidence that a great smile can give you, and we want to help you reach that milestone.

At Greene Street Dental, we use advanced technology to design custom-fitted dentures that feel and look as much like your natural teeth as possible. Using the iTero intraoral scanner, we can take precise measurements of your remaining teeth and gums in the office. Our restorative dentist will use the scans to design your brand-new smile.

What Kinds of Dentures Are There?

Dentures are some of the most versatile tooth replacement options on the market because they can be custom-fitted to the shapes of your gums and designed to accommodate any remaining teeth.

What Are Dentures Made of?
Modern dentures are often made out of plastic, so they’re easy and relatively inexpensive to replace. Not to mention, acrylic and nylon dentures are extremely lightweight, so you don’t feel like your teeth are going to get weighed down and fall out as you might with the heavy rubber dentures of the past.

The dentures of today are plastic, but some may use metal wings to secure to existing teeth. These materials come together to form several different kinds of dentures:

  • Removable partial dentures. Removable dental partials have hard plastic bases, often with pieces of metal securing the base around existing teeth or forming to the roof of the mouth.
  • Flexible partial dentures. These softer nylon-based dentures don’t use metal to secure around neighboring teeth. They may have plastic wings to help keep them in place, but they are mostly secured by denture cream.
  • Full dentures. For those who need to replace an entire row of teeth, full dentures adhere to the gums and roof of the mouth for a firm fit and natural-looking appearance.
  • Snap-in dentures. Supported by dental implant posts, snap-in dentures can be “snapped” in or out of place with light pressure. They tend to feel more secure than dentures that are applied with denture cream. These are also called overdentures or implant-supported dentures.

Dentures Vs. Implants: Which One Is Better?

If you’re looking into tooth replacement, it’s a good idea to weigh your options to decide which is the best long-term option for you. Implants are a great alternative for many people, but they aren’t for everyone. For example, some patients may be ineligible for implants if they have extensive bone loss or gum recession due to periodontal disease.

If you have the choice between two similar options, here are some comparisons of some of the most important features:

  • Cost. Dentures are more affordable than implants. Where implants can cost up to $6,000 a tooth, dentures cost anywhere from $600 to $10,000 for a full set. Prices vary by city and office location, but unless you’re looking at implant-supported options, dentures are typically more accessible.
  • Longevity. With the proper care, dental implants will last the rest of your life. When a crown breaks, it can be easily replaced. Conversely, dentures will need to be replaced many times throughout your lifetime. Sometimes, the shape of your gums changes and you’ll need to be re-fitted. Plastic dentures break, so they’ll need replacement. Successful implants are ones you never have to worry about outside of routine dental checkups.
  • Ease. This one isn’t as clear-cut. Yes, implants require a more invasive procedure which leads to a longer recovery time. Dentures are near-instant and painless. However, once implants have healed, they require very little maintenance. Relative ease may be best interpreted on an individual basis.
